Oldham Coliseum Theatre is continuing its major refurbishment, with contractors Tilbury Douglas making strong progress on improvements across the historic building. Partners have confirmed the venue is now set to reopen in 2027.
As detailed surveys have been completed during the refurbishment, additional work has been identified to bring the theatre up to modern standards. This includes addressing structural elements and removing materials such as asbestos, which are commonly found in buildings of this age.
Additional Funding Secured
An extra £7 million has been agreed by Oldham Council to fund the necessary works. The money is grant-funded, meaning no additional expense will fall on Oldham Council taxpayers.
An Oldham Council spokesperson said: "Work is continuing to make good progress on the refurbishment of Oldham Coliseum Theatre. As these works have progressed, we have been able to do more detailed surveys on each part of the building. We have then discovered that more work is needed on areas like the staircase, where old buildings such as these can have issues with asbestos."
The spokesperson added: "The Coliseum is a historic venue, so making it fit to be the proper home of theatre in Oldham means we need more time to bring it back to life. Our focus remains on making sure the theatre reopens as a high-quality venue that will serve Oldham for generations to come."
Theatre Remains Active During Works
While the building is under refurbishment, Oldham Coliseum Theatre continues to produce work across the borough. Shows are being presented in venues including Whittles and George Street Chapel.
