The first phase of Tommyfield Park officially opened in Oldham town centre on Friday 23 October, marking a major step in the town's regeneration. Mayor of Oldham Councillor Pam Byrne marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The opening park covers 1.5 acres on the site of the former Oldham sports centre. When complete, Tommyfield Park will span 5.7 acres across two phases, with the second phase set to open in 2027.
What the park offers
The first phase features open lawns, walking trails, seating areas, an amphitheatre-style terrace and dedicated play space for children and families. The park is designed as a place for residents and workers to relax, meet friends or take a break in the heart of the town centre.
Red sandstone excavated from the site has been incorporated into the landscaping, alongside sections of beech trees from Tandle Hill Country Park, blending the area's industrial heritage with new green space.
The Pioneers Stone
At the park's entrance stands the Pioneers Stone, created by Frank Rothwell OBE. The stone commemorates Oldham's role in the birth of the world's first IVF baby, Louise Joy Brown, who was born at Oldham General Hospital in 1978. It honours the pioneering medical team, Louise's parents and the women involved in the breakthrough.
Wider town centre plans
Tommyfield Park connects with Snipe Gardens, which opened in June 2025, creating a greener walking route between Oldham Bus Station and the town centre. The park supports Oldham's regeneration strategy to create a greener, healthier and more attractive town centre, helping connect neighbourhoods and support new housing developments.
The park is part of Oldham's £450 million Creating a Better Place regeneration programme, which also includes The Market and Loom at Spindles, J R Clynes, new homes at Princes Gate and improvements to public spaces across the town centre.
Young people shaping the future
Local young people are helping shape the future of the park through engagement with community groups and partners. Cameron Gates, involved through Spark Oldham, said: "Being involved in Tommyfield Park has been a brilliant experience. It's something that's going to be here for years to come and knowing I've played a part in it makes me really proud."
Second phase plans
The second phase will be built on the site of the former Tommyfield Market Hall and will include a larger play area, climbing features, water play and a sustainable pond.
Maintenance and safety
The park has CCTV cameras managed by the council's First Response team and will be regularly inspected, with town centre maintenance teams keeping the space clean and well maintained.
